As winter gets closer at Detailed Landscape, we talk to a lot of our clients about winterizing their landscapes to prepare for the cold weather. We mention it every year because preparing your plants and structures for the harsh conditions of Colorado winters is critical for a healthy, happy landscape. Winterization can encompass many different tasks, but here are some that tend to be overlooked.

Commonly Overlooked Tasks for Winterizing Your Landscape:

FERTILIZE YOUR GRASS

Even though you don’t see much happening above ground, the real action is in the soil. A fertilization of a high-nitrogen on your cool-season grass like bluegrass, fescue or ryegrass, before it goes dormant will help roots stay in peak condition. If you aren’t sure what fertilizer to use or whether you have a cool-season grass, call Detailed Landscape and we’ll make sure your lawn gets what it needs.

MULCH YOUNG PLANTS

If you’ve done some fall planting, it’s important to spread a few inches of mulch over your beds before the ground freezes. Newly transplanted or tender plants can be vulnerable to damage in the winter, and mulch will keep them stay warm and protected.

WATER TREES AND SHRUBS

The leaves on your trees and shrubs may have already fallen as your trees and shrubs settle in for a long sleep, but a good soak after trees and shrubs go dormant—but before the ground freezes—will help prevent roots from drying out and weakening.

PROTECT YOUR DECK

Ice, snow and cold weather can be hard on decks—especially if they’re made of wood. Don’t forget to give your deck or other wooden landscape structure a thorough cleaning and apply a new layer of water-repellant finish to prevent water penetration and damage like warping and cracking.

If you have any questions or lack the time to do these important tasks yourself, give the professionals at Detailed Landscape a call. We’re ready to help you with winterizing your landscape to keep it in peak condition all season long.
