5 Landscaping Trends for 2014

5 Landscaping Trends for 2014

Check out these Landscaping Trends for 2014:

1.  Lighting

Lighting has always been part of landscape design, but this year it’s taking a whimsical turn. Lanterns, chandeliers, and string lights are hanging overhead in many outdoor living spaces. Now is a good time to install a pergola if you don’t already have one, since the trend is shifting into overhead lighting.

2.  Fire pits

Campfires are coming out of the parks and into backyards, taking home entertainment to a whole new level this summer. This is a great trend to jump on, since everyone in the family will be able to enjoy it for years to come. An added plus is that the masonry involved in fire pits works well with the popular xeriscape designs of Colorado landscapes.

3.  Outdoor Kitchens

More and more families are adding outdoor kitchens to their homes, as they extend a home’s living space without the high cost of an add-on. Outdoor kitchens provide a great opportunity for families with teenagers to have an extra space in the warmer months for entertaining.

4.  Vegetable gardens

As more and more people are choosing to grow their own produce, vegetable gardens are cropping up everywhere. Gone are the days of small planters on the patio—vegetable plots are now being worked artfully into landscape design.

5.  Native plants

You will see more and more native plants used in landscape design this year, and a big part of that has to do with sustainability. When installed in the right habitat, native plants usually require less maintenance than more exotic plants. Native plants don’t need fertilizer or pesticides, reducing toxicity while also saving you time and money. Plus, they contribute to the natural ecological processes in your area.
